Alarming Domestic Violence Statistics

Thousands of Americans are affected by domestic violence each day, and the harmful consequences of do not stop after a victim has been separated from an abuser.   • In the United States, a woman is assaulted or beaten once every 9 seconds;
  • 1 in 3 American women and 1 in 4 American men have experienced physical violence of some kind from an intimate partner. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced some form of severe violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime;
  • Each year, 10 million women and men are abused by an intimate partner That works out to an average of nearly 20 incidents of intimate partner abuse every minute;
  • There are over 20,000 phone calls made to domestic violence resource hotlines nationwide each day;
  • 1 in 7 women say they have been stalked by an intimate partner to the extent that they feared they would be harmed or killed;
  • When a gun is present in a domestic violence situation, the likeliness of death increases by 500 percent;
  • In America, violence from intimate partners makes up 15 percent of all violent crime;
  • Nearly 20 percent of domestic violence includes a weapon of some kind;
  • Only 34 percent of those injured by an intimate partner receive the medical care they need for their injuries;
  • Women ages 18 to 24 are the most at risk for intimate partner abuse;
  • Domestic violence in America costs upwards of 8 billion dollars each year; and
  • Victims of domestic violence miss a total of 8 million paid workdays every year?
